My journey in recovery began in 2019, when I decided to get sober after 10 plus years of drug addiction. I had "tried" to get sober before, but I never followed the work required to maintain sobriety. This time was different. I had faced many losses, dangers, and consequences because of my addiction. I had run ins with the law and had been to many hospitals. I had no answer when a doctor asked me what I was going to do differently this time. I knew the only true answer was the one I feared the most: getting sober. In that moment, I chose to change rather than stay the same. I knew I had to try it another way; someone else's way.
With the help and support of family and friends, I moved to Los Angeles and got to work. I joined a 12-step program and found a sponsor. I went to meetings and shared with others. I made amends and forgave myself. I found joy in helping other addicts and alcoholics. Today, I am grateful for every sober day. I have a purpose and a direction in life. I have goals and dreams. Most importantly, I have peace and happiness.
When I first got sober, I had very low self-esteem and self-worth. Besides the physical toll my addiction had on my body, my mental, emotional, and spiritual self were damaged as well. Through my own journey of self-discovery, I learned to forgive and most importantly love myself. I used to look at the world and see what I could get out of it, now I believe I can bring something to it. My relationship to the universe changed because I finally felt a part of it. I tell people I live a life beyond my wildest dreams. When I was in addiction, I couldn't fathom a life where I was reliable, trustworthy, a good friend, brother, son, or partner. I didn't believe I could pay bills, take part as a member of society, or show up in others' lives. I didn't believe I was worthy of marriage, children, happiness, or even anything essential to fulfillment. Now I believe in myself and my purpose. I love myself. The most powerful experience I had recently was realizing I was terrified of making a new change but as afraid as I was, I believed in myself way more!
